Hanway Commercial has successfully challenged and reduced the 2023 Business Rates Assessments for four UK’s leading Test Match Cricket Grounds: Lords, The Oval, Edgbaston and Trent Bridge.
The Valuation Office had increased assessments on the clubs by between 20% and 100% between the 2017 and 2023 Rating Lists. Despite the availability of RHL Relief and Transitional Relief, clubs faced a significant increase in their rates liabilities.
Our in-house sports stadia expert, Mark Short, commented, “the 2023 Rating Revaluation brought around some interesting negotiations with the ‘age-old’ discussions of turnover vs profitability to the forefront, but added to this were the complications of a valuation date of 1st April 2021 and the uncertainties relating to Covid restrictions, future outbreaks and the return of fans to sports stadia.”
Following negotiations with the Valuation Office, we were able to achieve significant reductions in business rates liability of between 21% and 36%, ensuring more manageable rates liabilities until the next planned Rates Revaluation in 2026.
